Proper old-fashioned mystery
Fair clues, a great setting and an ending I did not see coming. Already on book two.

A Lamplighter's Coast Mystery
When a lighthouse keeper's account book washes up a hundred years after the keeper drowned, archivist Nell Fenwick expects a curiosity. Instead she finds a list of payments to people who should not exist, and a final entry dated the week after his death.
To learn who kept writing in a dead man's ledger, Nell must go back to Fenwick Light, the island her family left and never talks about.
“A cracking, salt-stung mystery with a heroine you would follow into any fog.”
“Atmospheric and clever. I read it in two sittings and then went looking for a lighthouse.”
“Halloway writes the sea like someone who has been cold on it.”
Fair clues, a great setting and an ending I did not see coming. Already on book two.
I bought this for a train journey and missed my stop. The ledger entries at the start of each chapter are a brilliant touch.
Slow to start, but once Nell reaches the island it is wonderful. The keeper's cottage felt real.
