About

Wren Halloway writes mysteries set on the fictional Lamplighter's Coast, a stretch of islands where the lighthouses keep more than ships safe.
She grew up above a ship chandlery in a harbour town, worked for nine years as an archivist, and still cannot pass a box of old letters without opening it. The Salt Ledger, her first novel, began with a real lighthouse keeper's account book she found in a council archive.
She lives with her partner, two cats and an unreasonable number of maps.

My writing desk, in six objects
People ask about my process. My process is mostly this desk. A legal pad. First drafts are by hand. Typing them up is the second draft.
The sound of drowned bells
Almost every coast with a lost village has the same legend: on still nights you can hear the church bells ringing under the water.
How an account book from 1887 started a trilogy
In my archive job I opened hundreds of boxes a year. Most held exactly what the label said.
